Estrogen Dominance is a term that was coined by Dr. John Lee. According to Dr. Lee’s book, What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About PreMenopause. The term is used to describe a condition where a woman can have deficient, normal, or excessive estrogen but has little or no progesterone to counter the effects of the estrogen. In addition, he goes onto to say, "...that it is possible that men, women, and children are all suffering a little from estrogen dominance, because there are so many xenohormones in our environment.
How can our environment have so many of these chemicals that mimic estrogen?
Easy! We live in an industrialized world filled with chemicals known as xenohormones (or hormone disrupters) which are found in synthetic hormones, personal care products and in the environment. When these chemicals are absorbed into our bodies (think lotion/shampoo), inhaled (think car exhaust), or taken orally (think synthetic hormones), they can disrupt the natural hormones in women, men and children.
In addition, these chemicals are found in pesticides, fire retardant, personal care products, cosmetics and household cleaning products. Being exposed to these different chemicals set in motion the likelihood of women becoming estrogen dominant (which causes PMS & Pre-Menopause). Xenohormones may be all around us, but there is good news to be shared! There are ways that you can avoid a lot of these chemicals just by making some good choices. Lets look at some of the choices you can make to avoid these estrogen mimicking chemicals that can cause Estrogen Dominance in us and our families.
A great summary of what to avoid comes from Dr. Samuel Espstein, chairman of preventcancer.org Dr. Samuel Epstein is a pioneer when it comes to educating about chemicals in personal care products. He advocates that all personal care products with known carcinogens should be required to place warning labels on their products, much like the tobacco industry is now required to do. You can find this list in his book, The Politics of Cancer Revisited.
13 Toxins You Can Choose Not To Use
- All synthetic hormones, includes the birth control pill and hormone replacement therapy
- Food Additives: aspartame, food dyes, fluorides
- Silicon implants
- Animal fats from animals that are fed hormones and antibiotics (would add organic fruit/vegetables)
- Estrogenic Pesticides, which cause Estrogen Dominance
- rBGH injected into dairy cows and contaminates milk
- Household chemicals & cosmetics (Find Safe Products Here)
- Lindane Lice Shampoo
- Workplace Carcinogens
- Lifestyle risks, such as: alcohol, tobacco, and dark hair dyes
- X-rays in pregnancy and childhood.
By using natural progesterone and watching what you consume and expose yourself too, you can naturally alleviate your PMS, Pre-Menopause, Menopause symptoms without surgery, synthetic hormones, or SSRI’S (Prozac, Paxil, Lexapro). You may not make the drug companies happy but it will make you happy and isn’t that what it is really about?!
We read about it everyday, friends share the news with us, we see it on the TV. It is undeniable. The population of women, men and children are getting sicker sooner with illnesses that once were a rarity. Can it be true that depression is linked to diet, that chemicals in cosmetics and personal care products can cause cancer, that women struggle more with PMS, PreMenopause, and Menopause symptoms because of the chemicals in our products, on our food, and in our air?
According to the research.it seems so.
What are These Xenoestrogens ?
Xenoestrogens, also know as, Hormone Disrupting Chemicals are chemicals that are found in our environment that when absorbed into our bodies either through the skin, inhaled, or consumed can then mimic our own estrogen, leading to what is known as estrogen dominance. In addition, some research indicates there may be a link between these chemicals and cancers. These chemicals can be found in most everything these days. From the personal care products we use in our home, such as, lotions, bubble bath and shampoo to the cleaners we use to protect us, such as, laundry detergents, bleach, cleansers. They are also found in our food supply from the BGH hormone found in dairy cows to the pesticides that are sprayed on the fruits and vegetables that we consume. We may not be able to avoid all of them because we do live in an Estrogen Dipped world but we can certainly make subtle changes that can limit us and our families to these exposures. Don’t be fooled into believing that small exposures carry little risk. As with anything, small exposures over periods of time will increase your risk of Estrogen Dominance, as well as, possibly contributing to illness.
In 1996, a wonderful book called, Our Stolen Future was released. The book explores and brings to light the truth about hormone disrupting chemicals on the public. The authors of the book, Theo Colburn, Dianne Dumanoski, and John Peterson continue to update the public on their latest findings at ourstolenfuture.com |
