If You Wouldn’t Eat It….Why Wear It?
Yes, your skin does absorb what you put on it, rub in it, and wear on it. Whether it is your foundation, your deodorant, or the lipstick you wear. It is absorbed into your skin which is the largest organ of your body. Here are some surprising statistics from the Environmental Working Group (EWG)
If a women uses 9-12 personal care products each day….she has just exposed herself to 126 carcinogens..according to the EWG.
The FDA does not regulate Products it only classifies…in its 70 plus history it has only banned or restricted 9 personal care product ingredients. By contrast the EU has banned 450 ingredients.
- The report from the EWG concluded: of the 7,500 products only 28 have been fully assessed
- 99.6% of those examined contain one of more ingredient that has never been assessed for safety
- 1 of every 120 products on the market today contain ingredients certified by government authorities as known or probable carcinogens
- 71 hair dyes, by leading companies, contain ingredients derived coal tar – they all received a exemption from federal rules
- 55% of products contained penetration enhancers (which cause ingredients to penetrate deeper into the skin and into the bloodstream). The EWG found that 50 of these products contained known or probable human carcinogens.
- Nearly 70% of products contained impurities linked to cancer and other health problems

ewg.org is a wonderful source of information regarding ingredients in cosmetics. If you haven’t checked out the site…please do! You will find information on products that you may be currently using, the safety of these products, and the overall rating. The work that this organization is doing is amazing!

has a wealth of information and articles from the EWG regarding the safety of personal care products and cosmetics.
Dr. Samuel Epstein has a word of caution for us all:
SHOPPER BEWARE!
- According to recent daily use estimates, three personal care products are used on infants and children, men use ten personal care products, and women use six cosmetics and 13 personal care products; some products are used several times daily.
- Assuming mainstream industry products each contain only two carcinogens, this results in daily exposures to six different avoidable carcinogens for infants and children, 20 for men, and 38 for women.
- While ingredients are listed on product labels, there is no warning as to the cancer risks from any of these ingredients.
- It is UNTHINKABLE that women would knowingly inflict such exposures on their infants and children, let alone on themselves, if products routinely used were labeled with explicit warnings of cancer risks.
- It is UNBELIEVABLE that the powerful multibillion dollar global mainstream industries continue to inflict such risks on unsuspecting consumers, especially as safe alternative products are available.
- It is equally UNBELIEVABLE that regulatory agencies worldwide still deny citizens their inalienable right-to-know of information on avoidable cancer risks from common consumer products.
- It is even more UNBELIEVABLE that the "charitable" American Cancer Society and federal National Cancer Institute and "cancer establishments" worldwide remain recklessly silent and fail to advise consumers, Congresses and Parliaments, of the scientific evidence for these avoidable cancer risks.
